Newer go karts have been updated to be able to ride on different terrains including surface streets. The larger buggies can reach speeds of 55+ miles per hour.  Most come equipped with a 4-stroke engine which can provide more than enough torque to power the vehicle up to those high speeds.  The 4-stroke engines also aid in the long life of the vehicle because these engine types use a dedicated lubrication oil rather than the 2-stroke engines which waste their oil by mixing it with the gasoline fuel.
